A bit of history
The Parisian sewer system came to be thanks to the Baron Haussmann, whose idea was to modernize and clean up the city in the 1850's. As early as the end of the 19th century, visits of the "égouts" became the latest fashion.
More than 2100 km of galleries follow the long boulevards and streets whose names they've now taken.
An Egouts Museum now exits at the same address, and visitors can discover the mysteries of this underground city.
